What Starlink is
Starlink is satellite internet from SpaceX. A dish on your roof connects to satellites in low orbit, which gives much lower delay than older satellite internet, so video calls, streaming and remote CCTV viewing work well.
When Starlink makes sense
Starlink is most useful where fibre is not available or mobile data is weak or unreliable: outskirts of towns, farms, mining and construction sites, schools and offices that need a backup connection.
Where fibre is available it is often cheaper for heavy use, so many businesses use Starlink as a second connection that keeps them online when the main line fails.
Mounting the dish
The dish needs a clear view of the sky. Trees, water tanks and taller buildings can cause short dropouts. A roof or pole mount is usually best, and the Starlink app has an obstruction check you can run before mounting.
Mount the dish securely against strong winds and run the cable neatly with protection where it enters the building.
Power and WiFi coverage
Put the Starlink router on a UPS or inverter so the internet stays on during power cuts.
The built-in router covers a typical home. For larger houses, offices with several floors or concrete walls, add mesh WiFi units or cabled access points to reach every room.
- Check the sky view with the Starlink app before mounting
- Use a secure roof or pole mount
- Back up the router against power cuts
- Add mesh WiFi or access points for large buildings
Common questions
Can Starlink be used for CCTV remote viewing?
Yes. Once the CCTV recorder is connected to the Starlink network, you can view cameras remotely using the camera manufacturer's app.
Does Starlink work in the rain?
Heavy rain can briefly reduce speed, but the service generally keeps working. A clear view of the sky matters more for reliability.
